Step 1
Start by drawing a circle and an oval that is overlapping. The circle shape will help you to draw Totoro’s head and its oval body.
Step 2
Use a series of overlapping curves to contour the character. Draw a wide semicircle over the original circle. Create a raw oval from curves that overlap inside the original oval.
Step 3
Delete original instruction lines. Then, use overlapping curves to outline Totoro’s wide and short arms.
Step 4
Use short lines that meet at sharp points to surround narrow triangles at the end of the arm. They form the animal’s claws. Then, use overlapping curves to create Totoro’s legs, feet, and toes. Finally, use short lines to surround a small triangle at the tip of each toe, representing the toenail.
Step 5
Draw two evenly spaced circles on the head. Draw two small circles in each circle. Shade one of the small circles to indicate the pupil.
Step 6
Continuing to detail Totoro’s face. Use curves to outline pointed eyebrows, a surprised nose and mouth. Draw another curve on the nose and use some vertical lines to differentiate the teeth in the mouth.
Step 7
Sketch Totoro’s rabbit-like ears using a series of short curves. Draw a curve inside the near ear to contour the inner ear. Then, draw three lines on each side of Totoro’s face to show the beards.
Step 8
Use the curve pairs to draw some boomerang or curved triangles on Totoro’s chest.
Step 9
Totoro’s fur texture with short curves.
Step 10
Color Totoro. He is a grayish brown with a cream colored belly.
