How to Draw a Penguin Chick

Do you want to learn how to draw a baby penguin? They are very cute and easy to draw. This simple, step-by-step wildlife drawing tutorial can show you how.

Penguins are birds that live in the sea or ocean. They cannot fly through the air, but they are excellent swimmers, appearing to “fly” through the water.

We often think of penguins as living in snowy areas, floating on ice floes or glaciers (like this polar bear cub). But of the 21 species of penguins, only a few live in Antarctica. Galapagos penguins even live in the tropics!

Penguin Chick Drawing Step by Step

Step 1

Start sketching the penguin by drawing its eyes. Draw two ovals with a smaller oval inside them. Shadows between shapes in each set. Note that one eye is much narrower than the other.

Step 2

Next, sketch the cartoon baby penguin’s head. Use a squiggly line to outline the blurred head.
At the base of the head, draw a series of short lines. Use a curved, rounded triangle as the beak. Use a curved line to enclose the bottom of the beak. Then, outline the base of the beak with short lines.

Step 3

Detail of the baby bird’s face. Use zigzag lines and a series of short lines to enclose the eyes and beak.

Step 4

Use overlapping squiggly lines to draw the penguin’s body – one for the chest and another for the belly. Draw short lines at the end of each line.

Step 5

Draw the baby penguin’s back, again with a long squiggly line.

Step 6

Draw flippers or wings. Use a long curved line for the front or leading edge of the wing and a squiggly line for the back. Draw a series of short lines where the wings meet the body.

Step 7

Draw the remaining wing. Again, use a curved line and a squiggly line.

Step 8

Draw the penguin’s feet. Use overlapping curved lines to sketch the toes. Attach a rounded triangle at the tip of each toe to indicate a toenail or claw. Outline the top of the toe with short lines.

Step 9

Complete your penguin outline by texturing its soft body. Use groups of several short lines.

Step 10

Color your baby penguin cartoon. We colored ours grey, black and white, just like a real-life emperor penguin.
