Step 1

For the first step of this dachshund drawing tutorial, we will focus on the dog’s head and face.

Dachshunds have a rather distinctive appearance to them, consisting of a long, thin snout and large drooping ears around their face.

You can start by drawing a large circle for the left ear. Then use some concatenated curves for the top of the head.

This will then stretch into a longer line for the muzzle.

At the end of this muzzle, we will draw a relatively large nose. To finish this step, draw a long smiley mouth extending to the left from below the nose.

That’s all there is to this step, so now you can move on to step 2!

Step 2 – Now draw the chest and start the back of the dachshund

In the second step of this dachshund drawing, you’ll add some details to the first chest, back and legs. First, extend a slight curve from the base of the head down.

Then there will be a short little leg going down from there with some little curved toes at the base. Then draw a smaller curve for the chest near this leg.

Then we’ll plot the back start of the dachshund. This is simply a small curve going down from the base behind the head.

Once these details have been drawn, we will continue to step 3 of this tutorial.

Step 3 – Draw another leg and more of the body

In this third part of the tutorial on how to draw a dachshund, we will add the remaining front leg along with more of the body.

First, let’s start with that leg. This will go next to the first one, and it will look very similar to that first one. Then we will add some curves to the back and belly of the body.

The back line will be slightly straighter than the belly line, as the belly line will curve sharply inward near the end.

Step 4 – Next, draw the hind legs for the dachshund

You will now draw the hind legs of this dachshund drawing in this fourth step. The hind legs look quite similar to the front legs, but they will be slightly longer.

The legs at the back will also be further apart and positioning them this way will help give this adorable dachshund a more confident look!

Once you’ve finished drawing the pins later, you’ll be ready to add some final details and elements in the next step of the tutorial.

Step 5 – Add the final details to your dachshund drawing

Now you are ready to add the final details of this painting in this fifth step of the tutorial on how to draw a dachshund. To start, we’ll draw a second eye contour on the left side.

Then you can add some small circles inside of each eye for the pupils. Then add some curved brows above the eyes and a curved line around the mouth.

Finally, add a nice little curled tail to the back of the dachshund that extends upwards. Once you’ve added these details, you can finish with your own final touches!

Painting the background would just be an idea how you could finish it, and if you wanted to do that what kind of setup would you choose for this adorable dachshund?

Step 6 – Finish your dachshund drawing with color

The breed has a lovely palette of alternating dark and light browns, and this is the approach we used in our example for this dachshund painting.

When coloring your own description, you can use our example as a blueprint when coloring so you can get a realistic look for your dachshund.

When coloring any picture, part of the fun is choosing the artistic mediums that you will use to achieve your color choices.

You can use some painterly medium or some brighter medium like crayons depending on the mood you want for the image.

How do you think you will color in this wonderful picture?
