How To Draw A Realistic Mermaid

Please see the drawing tutorial in the video below

You can refer to the simple step-by-step drawing guide below

Step 1

We’ll start this first step to drawing a mermaid by sketching out the basic guidelines and shapes for a workable canvas. This will help you create your mermaid a lot better. Start by drawing a circle for the head, outline in the face guides, and then draw the body as for her torso. Next, draw another shape for the mermaid’s bottom as well as a motion path for her tail.

Step 2

Here’s a close-up of how to draw your mermaid face. Start on the left side and begin to outline the forehead, cheeks, chin, and jawline. Next, use the facial guides to draw her wide open eyes and thick lashes like that. You will also need to draw her nose and then for the next part of the face, outline at the eyebrows, eyeballs, then draw her lips in the form of a smile.

Step 3

Okay guys this is one of my favorite parts of this drawing. Now we’ll deal with pulling her hair out. Start at the top and create twisting lines in a downward spiral using a wavy stroke. If you want your mermaid to have her hair straight or a different style, that’s always fine. Once you’ve drawn her length and style, you can start sketching details and definitions. As for me, I wanted this mermaid to have a playful look like Ariel, so that explains her loose hair in front of her face.

Step 4

Next, draw on her shoulders and arms as well as her hands. Notice how she’s lying on her stomach, meaning she’s holding her head up with her arms bent and her hands resting on her chin or jawline. Take some time for this step because it’s really important to do a test drawing on her hand.

Step 5

Draw in the other arm. You can only see her forearm because her hair is covering the rest. Next, outline her torso as well as the shape of her breasts. Draw the shell on the visible bust like that, and also outline the curls.

Step 6

Okay guys, we’re almost there. Now you will draw most of her body starting from the rest of her torso. You will then outline her belly, her legs in the form of a mermaid fin, and then her butt. Outline some more or better, definition.

Step 7

You can now begin the process of drawing her tail in a very loose, polished pose or design. I want her tail fin to make her hair long. You can choose any mermaid tail style you like, but this is my favorite for this character.

Step 8

All you have to do is sketch some details on the fish like such a tail fin. Like her hair, they are like strands of hair. This adds texture and body to her tail.

Step 9

After you outline the final detail on her fins, you can start erasing your mistakes and instructions. You will have a coloring explosion for her.

Step 10

Here she finished it all. As you can see, I’ve sketched some slashes along her tail to detail the proportions. Pick a palette and then get busy coloring her.
