How to Draw Kunai Step by Step with this how-to video and step-by-step drawing instructions. Easy drawing tutorial for beginners and all.
Please see the drawing tutorial in the video below
You can refer to the simple step-by-step drawing guide below
Step 1: Draw Blade of the Kunai
Start the drawing by drawing a vertical line. This is done to ensure that your drawing is straight and to make it easier for you to see if your kunai is symmetrical.
Draw the blade towards the end of the line. It can be done like in this example.
You can also draw the kunai from an angle if you want.
Step 2: Outline Processing
The handle can be added by raising the blade. It has a cylindrical shape, but from this angle it will look like a long rectangle. It can be drawn with straight lines along the bottom and sides but the top of the handle (back side) should be slightly curved upwards.
You’ll find the handle is thinner than the blade on a knife or dagger.
Step 3 – Draw your ring
Add a loop to the handle. Draw an outer shape connected to each side, then draw a smaller inner circle.
After completing this step, you should have a sketch of the main Kunai parts.
Step 4 – Show blade edges
You can now erase the center line drawn in step 1 along with the handle and ring. You can now draw a pair of lines from the top end to the corners using the center line. This will show sharp edges.
Step 5 – Draw Your Handle Wrap and Finish Line Drawing
Wrap the handle by running along it. These can be drawn as a series of perpendicular lines, with a straight line at the end.
Step 6 – Apply Color
Manga and anime can display metal parts of kunai with different shades depending on the artist. They can also be painted black.
Then the blade will be solid gray. The ring can be the same color as the blade, but you should leave some reflective white curves. Make the handle light yellow and add a bit of brown or gray.
Step 7 – Add Shadows
The kunai bar in the previous example looks flat and bare. We’ll fix this by giving it some basic shadows.
This will make the shadow appear as if the light is coming in from the top left. This means that the lower left part of the blade is where the most light is (no ghosting).
You can paint the lower left and upper right areas with a darker gray. Since it’s facing away from the sun, the bottom right will be the darkest. This part can be made darker. The right side of the handle can be shaded.
You can apply a reflective gloss depending on the luster of the kunai metal. Metal will look duller if it has a darker (less bright) reflection. This is something you might want to do if you’re drawing one for Ninja. They won’t want shiny objects to attract attention when sneaking into the dark.
Here is an example showing the same kunai stick, drawn at an angle. The shaded area is again drawn as if the light source was in the upper left. The shading may be slightly different because the position of the object has changed. This will make the left side (basic gray) of the kunai lighter and the right side (darkest).
Inference
While this tutorial is very simple, it can be extremely helpful if your goal is to draw a Kunai. It is similar to other tutorials on AnimeOutline but it focuses more on anime style than general drawing. This tutorial shows that even something as simple as drawing a line as a guide can help you avoid common mistakes. You can also make your drawing look much better using very simple shading.
