Step 1
Before starting this broken glass tutorial, to make things easier you can use a light pencil to draw a perfect rectangle.
This will help you visualize what the glass will look like before it shatters. When you’re ready, we can start painting the top left side of the pane.
All of the pieces will be very close together, and while some will be off-angle with the others next to them, they will all look like they will fit together like a jigsaw puzzle.
Close to the center position, broken glass will also be collected to indicate the place of impact.
Step 2 – Next, draw the bottom left side of the glass panel
Now that you have drawn the top right of the frame, you can draw the bottom left for your broken glass drawing in this step.
When you draw this sequel, you will do it in a very similar way to how you drew the first part.
Again, the pieces will be at jagged corners, but they will also look like they would if pushed against each other.
Once you’ve finished drawing this section, we can start adding some more as we move on to the next steps of the tutorial.
Step 3 – Now draw the next part of the pane
This step of our how to draw broken glass tutorial will see you draw the bottom right side of the frame. We will also draw more about the impact point of the glass.
This area of the glass will have cracks from the rounded shape instead of the larger, more angular pieces you’ve drawn so far.
Otherwise, all the other parts will look pretty much the same as the rest you’ve drawn and will again look as if they fit together.
Once this part of the frame is drawn, we’ll be ready to paint the final piece of the broken glass in the next few steps.
Step 4 – Next, draw the outline of the last part
Now you are ready to start the final part of this broken glass drawing. To make things easier, we’ll sketch this final part before you start working on the finer details.
You can draw some lines to give rough angles to the pieces that you will draw shortly.
The lines for this angle will be subdivided into parts, as each line will represent a separate part.
Once you’ve drawn these lines as they appear in the reference image, you’re ready to add some final strokes in the next step!
Step 5 – Add the final details to your broken glass drawing
You’ve reached step five of this tutorial on how to draw broken glass, and in this step we’ll be drawing the final pieces.
In this step, we will also draw the impact point that created the crack in the first place.
This part can be a bit more difficult to draw, as there will be many smaller sections that come together to form a rounded crack shape.
For this part, you can use a fine-tipped pen or a very sharp pencil, as the details can get a bit cumbersome.
Once that part has been drawn, you can finish by drawing the rest of the larger sections. When the drawing is complete, you may be able to draw the object that smashed it lying nearby!
Step 6 – Finish your broken glass painting with color
This is the final step of this broken glass drawing, and in it you will finish it with some colors.
In our reference image, we used different shades of gray and blue to create the shiny, transparent look of the glass.
You can use some of the same colors for your own broken glass painting, but you can also use some unique colors instead!
When coloring, you may want to use a softer medium like watercolor paints or crayons to help create the transparency, but whatever you use will look great. We can’t wait to see what you choose!
