Step 1
While there are different types of styles and characters throughout the anime, it is often rather stylized and exaggerated.
That will certainly be true of the design we will be doing in this tutorial on how to draw an anime dog. For the first step of this tutorial, we will focus on this dog’s head and facial contours.
For the base of the face we will use some small jagged lines. They will be used to make the face look more wrinkled.
You can also draw the edges of the head and they will extend to some large, pointed ears which you can draw using some finer lines.
Finally, we will draw a large curly bun extending from the middle of the ears and across the face. Now that’s all there is to do and then you can move on to the next step.
Step 2 – Now draw some details on the face and the glasses it is wearing
You have completed the first sketch, and in this second part of your anime dog drawing you will add some details and interior elements.
First, we will draw some sunglasses that it will wear. They will be drawn using several circles near the top of the head and then you can add a smaller circle inside each circle.
Then use some curves for the thin straps to secure them to the head.
Next, we will draw the dog’s eyes. In typical anime fashion, they would be huge and expressive.
Finally, draw a small triangle for the nose and then extend some curved lines from its base for the mouth. Finish with some details on the inside of the ear and then we’ll move on.
Step 3 – Draw the starting point of the legs and torso
You’ve completed the dog’s head, and in this third step of the how to draw an anime dog tutorial, we’ll start focusing on the body. First, we will draw the front pins.
The pose we have this dog shows him stretching his front paws forward and these leg contours can be drawn using simple curves with small jagged lines details to add fur.
Finally for this step you can draw the back of the dog. This will be drawn using a simple curved line extending upwards, as shown in the reference image. Then it’s time for step 4!
Step 4 – Next, draw the back legs
Continuing with this anime dog drawing, we will now add the dog’s hind legs. First, draw a circle using a single curved line extending from the dog’s back to his belly.
Then draw another long, thin, and round shape behind for the bottom of the leg.
Finish this section by drawing some smaller circles for the feet before we move on to some final details in the next step.
Step 5 – Add the final details to your anime dog drawing
To complete the design before moving on to the final step of this anime dog tutorial, we will be adding a large bushy tail.
This will be drawn using multiple pointed curves so that they connect to each other to create the entire tail.
Once you’ve added this extension, you can also add some extra details and ideas of your own!
It can be fun to draw the background to show what adventures this anime dog might be on. What kind of settings do you think this dog could be in?
Step 6 – Finish your anime dog drawing with color
Now you can finish this anime dog drawing in style as you add some color! Anime characters are usually brightly colored, but they can also be more obscure in appearance.
This second approach is what we did in our reference image.
We used some lovely browns for the dog’s coat, then we used gold for the goggles’ strap with blue for the lenses.
