Step 1
While doing this tutorial on how to draw a sword, your life will become much easier if you have a ruler in hand. In fact, you can use it in this first step!
To start this tutorial, you can start with a rather small circle that will go to the end of the hilt or handle of the sword.
Then, using the ruler we mentioned earlier, you can draw two lines going down from this circle. Finally, you can add a small rectangle with rounded corners below those two lines.
Step 2 – Draw some more hilts in this step
For the second part of your sword drawing, you will simply draw two more small circles on the hilt.
These circles will take place on what is known as the guard of the hilt. These floating circles may look a bit out of place now, but with the third step you will see how they fit into the sword design!
Step 3 – Next, complete the cross section
We covered in the previous step how we’re going to finish off the crossbar in this third step of the sword draw tutorial, and we plan to stick to that!
First, draw a line connecting the two circles and also touch the bottom of the handle for your sword.
There will be another line connecting the bottom of the circles, but this will not be a straight and seamless line. This one will have a slight recess in the center, as shown in our reference image.
Finally, you can complete the shield by drawing a small circle in the center of it for decoration.
Step 4 – Now draw the blade
You’ll want to reuse your ruler for this sword drawing step! To draw the blade, you can extend two fairly long lines down from the bar.
Then, once you’ve drawn those two lines, you can add two smaller lines that meet at a point like in our reference image.
Step 5 – Draw some details for the handle
This drawing of yours looks really great! In this step of the sword draw tutorial, we’ll add some texture to the sword’s handle.
To do this, all you need to do is draw a series of slight curves along the hilt as shown in our reference image.
The handle on the sword is often covered with bands of leather, and these ridges help give it the appearance of leather.
Once you’ve finished these lines, let’s move on to some final details!
Step 6 – Now finishing the blade and final details
This sixth step of your sword painting process will help you add some final details before finishing with some color. To start these details, first use your ruler to draw down the center of the blade.
This line should stop a bit before the tip of the sword. When this line ends, you can draw two smaller lines for the edges of the sword.
The reference image will guide you how these lines should look.
That wraps up the details that we’ll be adding to the sword drawing in this tutorial! Before you continue, make sure to add any details you want to your drawing.
They may include some background elements such as other pieces of equipment and the knight’s armor next to it.
Swords sometimes have decorative engravings on the blade, so you can add some engravings to really personalize your sword!

Step 7 – Finish your sword drawing with some color
Now that you’ve finished drawing your awesome sword, you can finish bringing it to life with some color in this step of our how to draw a sword tutorial!
We used a gray palette for the blade and then used some brown for the handle to complete the leather look we mentioned for that area.
This is just one of the many color schemes you can choose from, however, feel free to use any color you love for your sword!
You can combine some gold with some elements, or even include some red and green in some ornament to make it look like there are decorative rubies and emeralds.
