You can refer to the simple step-by-step drawing guide below
Step 1
In the first step of this lioness drawing tutorial, we’ll start by drawing the animal’s first head, neck, and legs.
Lions have rather short snouts and this gives their heads a well rounded and efficient design. Using some smooth lines, you can draw the outline of the head, nose and mouth.
We will also draw small and rounded ears on the top of the head.
Then, once this outline is drawn, we will add some details inside. These will include the inner shapes for the ears, and then there will also be some details and facial contours for the nose and eyes.
Finally, finish this step by drawing the lioness’ muscular shoulders and large first leg. Then it will be moved to step 2!
Step 2 – Now, draw the belly of the lioness
For the next step of your lioness drawing, we will add a belly for her. This should be a pretty easy step for you to take!
To start, draw a curved line extending back from below the shoulder of the leg that you drew in the previous step.
Then we’ll add some detail to the belly to make it look a little more textured. To do this, add some lines close together to have some shading details for the belly.
That’s all there is to do for this step and then move on to step 3 of the tutorial!
Step 3 – Draw the rest of the body contour for the lioness
We will be adding quite a bit to the picture in this step of the how to draw a lioness tutorial.
In this part we will finish most of the contour for the lioness and you can start by drawing her back with another curve.
This will extend to a curved tail, and then there will be a bit of hindquarters at the base of the tail connecting to the belly.
To finish this step, draw the bottom half of the remaining front leg below the body. Then add some shading to all of these elements before you continue.
Step 4 – Next, draw the remaining hind leg of the lioness
You can now add the final leg to the lioness drawing before we add some final details in the next step.
This leg will be extended backwards and will be at an angle below the tail. There will also be some more shading to the legs, more than what you used for the other parts of the lioness.
That will complete the entire contour of the lioness’ body and then you’ll be ready to finalize it with those final details.
Step 5 – Add the final details to your lioness drawing
You’re almost ready to add some color in the last step of our tutorial on how to draw a lioness, but first we’ll paint the ground she’s walking on.
Use a thick line underneath the lioness for this ground, then you can draw some small details and cobblestones. Before moving on to the last step of the tutorial, you can also add some details of your own to finish!
There are different environments where lions can be found, so you can paint background details like tall grass or maybe a lake background behind it.
These are just a few ideas that you can work on, so what else can you think of to finish off this majestic lioness?
Step 6 – Finish your lioness drawing with color
This is the final step of your lioness drawing, and in that we’ll finish it off with some color.
Lions don’t have particularly vibrant colors, but this helps them blend into the environment when hunting.
We created a more realistic look in our image, and that means we used a light brown tan for the body of the lioness.
Along with this tan, we also used lighter and darker shades to make the colors a bit more vibrant.
For the ground, we finished using a deep, dark brown. You can use similar colors if you like how these look, but you should also feel free to use any other colors you love.
What color and art medium do you think best suits this image?
