Step 1
In this step-by-step how to draw rain tutorial, we won’t just draw rain. We will also draw the rain cloud, and that is the aspect we will draw in this first step.
To do this, you will build the cloud using multiple interconnected curves.
There will be three clouds in total for this picture, and now we will draw the tops of the first two.
Step 2 – Draw some more clouds
We will build the clouds a little more in this step of your rain drawing. First, we will start by adding a small cloud in the foreground of the picture, and like the previous pictures, we will only paint the top part of it.
You can then complete the outline of the larger cloud that you started with in the first step. That’s all we’ll draw for this step and now you’re ready to move on to the next step!
Step 3 – Now, finish the rest of the cloud outline
This third step of our rain drawing tutorial will be finishing off the outline of the clouds before you draw the rain itself.
To do this, simply draw more bumpy lines for the remaining two clouds that you started with earlier.
While you can follow our reference image and duplicate the look and feel of it, you can also change the structure of the clouds a bit if you want! Then we will start drawing rain in the next step.
Step 4 – Next, draw raindrops
You took the first steps of this rain to draw the rain clouds, and in this step you will finally start drawing the rain! This step should be pretty easy, but it’s also one where you can tweak it a bit depending on your preferences.
It will be especially easy once you’ve practiced drawing raindrops a bit. For this step we will mainly focus on the area on the left side of the cloud. We made the raindrops relatively large in our reference image and kept it at six drops.
However, this is just one way to go, and as we mentioned, you can change it up a bit as you please.
You can make the drops smaller and more or even bigger. It’s completely up to you, so make sure to get creative and have fun with it!
Step 5 – Now you can complete the raindrops and final steps
It’s almost time to start bringing some great color into your painting, but first, we have a few highlights to add to this rain drawing tutorial.
First, you can end up raindrops on the other side of the area under the clouds. Again, you won’t feel like you have to copy our sample images exactly. You can if you like the look of it, but you can also change it up a bit!
Once you have all the drops, you can then add some curves inside the clouds to get some more detail.
That should work for the operations in this tutorial, but before you proceed, be sure to add any additional details you might want!
Perhaps you could change the structure of the clouds by stretching them out a bit or adding in shape.
You can also draw some elements like birds or an airplane flying below the clouds. These are just a few ideas to try, but what else can you think of this image?
Step 6 – Finish your rain drawing with some colors
The final part of your rain painting will be to add some great colors to complete the picture!
In our reference image, we used a blue palette for the clouds and raindrops, but this is just one of the many color schemes you can use.
You can also incorporate some darker colors to make them look like dark storm clouds. Perhaps you could also incorporate some brighter colors for sunlight to shine through or to suggest that a rainbow is forming.
By choosing your favorite colors and combining them using your different art media and tools, you can really do your own work on this rain painting!
