How to Draw a Clown face

Please see the drawing tutorial in the video below

You can refer to the simple step-by-step drawing guide below

Step 1

Start by drawing a standing oval in the center of your paper. This outlines the shape of the clown’s head.

Avoid pressing down too hard with the pencil when drawing the outline. It is important to draw with light strokes so that you can easily erase any parts of the outline that you may not need later.

To ensure that the clown’s head will be drawn in the center, you can use reference lines. Simply draw an intersecting horizontal and vertical line and use these as a guide.

The point where the two lines meet marks the midpoint, which is where you should draw the outline of the clown’s head.

Step 2 – Create the outline of the clown’s head

Draw two semicircles on each side of the clown’s head. This forms the clown’s ears. Make sure that the form of the ears is uniform.

Don’t forget to add two small curves on each ear to create the inner ear or the inner ear. This also adds detail on your drawing, making it look more realistic.

Step 3 – Next, Draw the hat the clown is wearing

Clowns usually wear a hat, so that’s exactly what we’re going to draw in this step.

The hat can be created by drawing a semicircle with a slightly flat bottom at the top of the clown’s head. This creates the crown of the hat.

Then draw an oval around the bottom of the crown to form the brim. Then, draw a line across the bottom of the crown to create a band around the crown.

Don’t forget to remove any part from the outline of the head that overlaps in the hat!

Step 4 – Then draw the clown’s hair

As for the clown’s hair, you can draw any hairstyle you like! Clowns often have funny hairstyles, so keep that in mind when drawing clowns.

As you can see in the illustration, we have kept the clown’s hair simple but different.

To create the afro hairstyle shown above, draw a scalloped line that forms a slanted triangle on each side of the clown’s head. This forms a large spiked plumage of the clown.

Step 5 – Then draw the clown’s eyebrows

Draw two curved shapes below the hat to create the clown’s arched eyebrows.

Make sure that the eyebrows are even and drawn to the same extent.

Step 6 – Now Draw the Clown’s Round Nose

Draw a perfect circle in the bottom center of the clown’s face.

This creates a large and rounded nose — one of the most distinguishing physical features of the clown!

Step 7 – Put a big smile on the clown’s face

Just below the wings of the nose, you draw two overlapping curves to create a smiling mouth.

Then draw an outline outside the mouth according to its shape. This creates the illusion of smudged lipstick around the clown’s mouth.

Step 8 – Style and design the clown’s look

In this step, you can style the clown to your liking! As shown in the illustration above, we just added a small flower at the back of the clown’s head.

Feel free to add more pattern on the hat or some decoration in the hair.

Don’t worry about exaggerating the design! In fact, the more creative the designs, the funnier the clown looks!

Step 9 – Add eyes to complete the look

Draw a giant standing oval just below each eyebrow. Then, inside each eye, draw a small circle with another small circle inside to create the corresponding pupil and iris.

Adds shade to the entire pupil while leaving the iris unobscured. This creates a dramatic “sparkling eyes” effect.

Now that we have successfully drawn a clown, it’s time for the most fun part, which is to color your drawing!

This is the part where you can show your artistic talent, especially the ability to mix and match different colors.

The color you will use for the clown is completely up to you! But here’s a trick you might find useful: mix white, yellow, red, and blue colors to create skin tones.

But depending on the complexion you’re trying to achieve, you may need to add certain colors.

Have fun with colors and watch the clown finally come to life!
