Day and Night scenery drawing with Oil Pastels step by step

Step 1: Prepare and Fix the Paper

Start by cutting a sheet of paper into a square shape. Place it on your work surface and secure all four sides with masking tape. This will keep the paper firmly in place while you work and leave a clean border around the finished artwork.

Step 2: Add the Daytime Colors

Use yellow and orange oil pastels to color the left side of the paper. Start with bright yellow and gradually add orange to create a warm, glowing daytime background. Cover the area evenly while leaving enough space for the main scenery.

Step 3: Add the Nighttime Colors

Move to the right side of the paper and use light blue and darker blue oil pastels to create the nighttime sky. Apply the colors from lighter to darker shades, building up the blue area until you achieve a rich nighttime background.

Step 4: Blend the Colors

Use a soft tissue or piece of paper towel to gently rub the oil pastels. Blend the yellow, orange, and blue areas until the colors become smooth and even. Take care not to mix the daytime and nighttime colors too much, so both sides remain clearly distinguishable.

Step 5: Draw the Large Tree

Draw a large, spreading tree in the center of the picture. Start with the main trunk and several strong branches, then add many smaller branches and leaves to create a full, mature tree. Use darker colors to make the tree stand out against the bright background.

Step 6: Add the Swings and Children

Draw two swings hanging from the branches of the tree. Add a girl sitting on the swing on the daytime side and a boy sitting on the swing on the nighttime side. Keep the figures small and simple so that the tree remains the main focus of the composition.

Step 7: Complete the Scenery

Finish the picture by adding grass along the bottom of the paper. On the left side, draw the sun in the daytime sky. On the right side, add a crescent moon in the nighttime sky. You can add a few additional small details to the grass, tree, or sky to make the scenery more lively.
