Step 1
Start by drawing two diagonal, curved lines. The lines should be tilted towards each other at the top. This outlines the slopes, or edges, of the volcano.
Step 2
Connect the lines at the ends with a short, curved line. This is a crater where lava erupts.
Step 3
Connect the diagonal lines at the bottom using a wavy, scallop line. You should now have a complete outline of the volcano’s shape.
Step 4
Draw lava that oozes from the volcano’s peak using a long and curved line. This line will double itself over and over, forming a “U”-shaped lava line of various sizes.
Step 5
Clear guides from the lava.
Step 6
Draw two curves that extend outwards from the volcano’s top. This shows the smoke and ash that the volcano spits out into the air. Add details to the bristles by drawing some shorter curves between the first line.
Step 7
Draw smoke clouds at the ends of the bristles. Do so using a series of short, connected “U”-shaped lines. Detail the smoke by drawing some “U” shaped strings, connecting lines inside the smoke cloud.
Step 8
Give the volcano some ground to stand on. Draw some wavy lines on each side of the volcano to denote the horizon, and perhaps some additional mountains in the background. Use a long, curved line to surround an irregular shape in the foreground of the volcano. This form can be a rock, or it can be a lake – it’s up to you!
Step 9
Add more details to the volcano.
Step 10
Color your volcano. In our example, we shaded a barren, brown, rocky wilderness around the volcano, with gray smoke and bright red and yellow lava.
