You can refer to the simple step-by-step drawing guide below
Step 1
In this cartoon ocean tutorial, we will draw this ocean scene inside the frame.
To draw this frame, we will use some lines, preferably with a ruler, for the top part. The bottom two corners will be rounded, as this will show the sand extending away from the frame.
Then we will finish this step by drawing the first sea creature. You can draw some corals and anemones before we move on to step 2!
Step 2 – Next, draw some more corals
Corals are always a truly beautiful, colorful sight to behold in the ocean, and we’ll add some more details to this part of your cartoon ocean drawing.
They will be drawn using some thin, curvilinear shapes so that it can wiggle around in the water.
As shown in the reference image, there will be some branches reaching out from the coral to make it look like a small tree. That’s all for now and then we can proceed to the next step!
Step 3 – Now draw some corals and other objects for the seabed
Continuing with this scene, we will bring some more corals and other sea creatures to the bottom of the ocean.
The other coral will look very similar to the first tree you drew, and it will be surrounded by other shapes representing plants and other creatures.
We’ll then use a bumpy line between these elements to show the sand between each object. This will also expand to the rounded corners you drew in the first step.
Step 4 – Next, draw some smaller details
The fourth step in this cartoon ocean tutorial will help you add some smaller creatures and objects to the seabed.
They will be very diverse, and will include objects such as seashells, starfish, and smaller shapes.
If you can think of any other little details to add, you should definitely go ahead and add whatever ideas you have!
Step 5 – Now, draw some bubbles
We’ll keep things simple for your cartoon ocean step! In this step we will add some bubbles to the water above the seabed.
They will be drawn as some simple circles. As shown in the reference image, they don’t have to be perfect circles. You can also draw more or less circles depending on your preference!
Step 6 – Add more sea creatures and plants
Now we will add some more amazing creatures to this composition! First, we draw a fun squid design on the left side.
Then we add a large floating fish on the right hand side of the image.
We’ll add some more creatures and more details in the next step of the tutorial, but you can also add even more creatures to finish this step!
Step 7 – Next, finalize the final elements of this cartoon ocean
This step of our cartoon ocean tutorial comes complete with some final details! Specifically, we’ll be adding a few more sea creatures to the mix.
First, we will draw a round jellyfish with some light spots on it. Then we add another fish to the scene.
Once these are added, you can add some of your own!
There are a lot of marine animals and plants that we don’t use, so if you have some favorites you can include them as some extras before moving on to the final step.
Step 8 – Now finish it with some color
Time to finish this beautiful painting with some color! The ocean is filled with amazing colors and textures, so there’s a lot you can do to make it amazing.
In our reference image, we tried to incorporate a lot of amazing bright color options and you can use this as inspiration for your own images.
You can also choose any of your own color choices that you might like! Now you are the one in charge and you can have a lot of fun experiences with different colors.
You can also have fun with the tools and art media you use. We think it would look great with some watercolor paints and crayons to highlight, but what would you use?
