Step 1

To start this tutorial on how to draw closed eyes, we’ll start with some lines for the eyes themselves.

This step will be much easier for you if you follow the reference images closely, as an important part of getting them to look right is how you arrange them.

As for the lines themselves, they are drawn as two wavy lines with a very light center section.

They may look easy when you see them, but can be surprisingly difficult when you have to draw them!

It might take a few tries, but you’ll definitely make it. When they look like the example images, you’re ready for the next step.

Step 2 – Draw the tip of the nose

The next step of your closed eye drawing won’t actually be dealing with the eyes themselves! Instead, you will draw two short lines that form the upper part of the bridge of the nose.

You’ll be able to add to the nose and draw the rest of it in a future step, but for now that’s this second step.

Step 3 – Now we will add some eyelash detail

With a drawing like this, the simple details often make the biggest difference. After you complete this step of our how to draw closed eyes tutorial, you will see this in action!

We’ll be adding some lashes to your closed eyes drawing in this step, and they’ll go a long way toward bringing this image together.

To draw them, you can draw some rather long jagged lines going down from the eye contour to form some thin and pointed shapes.

You can then color in these slim shapes to create the appearance of lashes. Currently, these eyelashes can cover about 3/4 of the closed eye line.

This one step alone makes them look so much more realistic!

Step 4 – Finishing Eyelashes

You started the lashes in the previous closed eyes step, and in this step you can finish drawing them inwards.

By this point you’ve got the hang of it, so for this step you just need to continue from what you started in the previous step to mask the rest of the closed eye line.

Step 5 – Now you can add some eyebrows

Our fifth step on how to draw closed eyes will be adding some final touches and you’ll be able to paint the picture yourself too!

Now, just draw some eyebrows above the closed eyes.

They are drawn with a series of thick lines close together. To make things easier, you can draw the contour shape with a pencil first, and then add the brow lines inside the shape.

Finally, you can draw some small and curved lines between the eyelids and the eyebrows to show the eyes below the eyelids. That does the same for our insights, but you can still add some of your own!

When you drew the bridge of the nose earlier, we mentioned drawing more of the nose, and you can do that now.

If you’re feeling more creative, you can even paint the rest of the face. You can use your own face for reference if this is something you want to try!

Step 6 – Finish your closed eye drawing with some colors

That brings us to the final stage of your drawing with your eyes closed and here is where you can get creative with some fun colors and art mediums!

We’ve already shown you one way you can color in this in our reference image, but this is the stage where you have to take charge and get creative with your colors.

Maybe while coloring in this drawing with eyes closed, you could use some of your favorite art tools to recreate your own skin tone for this drawing!

If you draw the rest of your face using your own face as a model, this will work especially well.

For skin tones, using mediums like watercolor paint can be great for getting more realistic tones, but there are many other mediums you can use that will also look great.
