How 2s Of Design

In today’s tutorial I will cover how to draw wood. This has been requested a few times, so I decided to include it in our “texture” series. Painting wood can be hard to fool because there are so many types and textures. So I’ll just present a simple way to draw wood that will give you a great place to start.

You can refer to the simple step-by-step drawing guide below

Step 1

The first step will be to define the outline of your wooden object. For this example, I’ll be making a simple tree, so I drew a rectangular outline to start with.

Step 2

Add a base color to your wooden objects. I’m doing this tutorial in Photoshop, so I’ll use a brownish orange color. If you’re using a pencil, you still need to follow this step. However, instead of color, you will be covered with a light layer of graphite.

Step 3

Now that we have the border and base color/value set up, we need to start mapping some grain patterns. I like to start by putting knots in the wood first and work around them. To create the knots, I drew wavy lines that bisect to create an oval with pointed ends.

Step 4

Add more rings inside each node and darken the core of the nodes. In this step, you can also start adding some vertical wavy lines to the rest of the grain.

Step 5

Continue drawing more wavy lines to create the wood grain until you have covered the entire surface area of the board. Don’t worry about placing each line perfectly because you want a natural and organic look to your furniture.

Step 6

At this point, all that’s left to do is clean up our drawing a bit and add the final details to the wood. As you can see in the image, I added a groove at the bottom of the board. I also added an accent to each grain of the wood to give it a weathered and textured look. And there you have it – you know how to draw wood!
