How to draw a sitting Cat

Please see the drawing tutorial in the video below

You can refer to the simple step-by-step drawing guide below

Step 1

For the first step in this cat drawing tutorial, you’ll want to draw a circle with a pencil. Using a drawing compass to draw a perfect circle can be helpful if you are having trouble doing it freely.

This circle will serve as a guide for you as you begin to draw the outline of the head.

Once you have the circle, carefully draw the starting lines that make up the head of your cat drawing, using the reference image as a guide.

If you have trouble drawing the outline, you can also use a pencil to do this part and then use the pen to rewrite the part when you feel satisfied.

Step 2

Now that you have your cat drawing in mind, you can erase the pencil circle you drew as a guide.

If you used a rewrite pen, make sure the ink is dry before erasing the pencil!

Step 3

We’ve finished the first part of your cat drawing, so now we’ll add the ears.

For the right ear, draw in a slightly curved triangle with no bottom connecting to the space you left in the head contour. Draw in another triangle for the inner ear.

Next, draw a curved ear shape for the left ear as shown in the reference image and then draw in the inner ear.

Step 4

The head sketch is now complete for your cat drawing, and next we’ll draw the cat’s first chest and legs.

Carefully draw in a curved line as shown in the reference image to form the chest. Draw a straight line for the leg and create a curve for the foot.

Finally, you’ll need to draw another line going up from the foot to form the other side of the leg. This part can be complicated, so be sure to refer to the reference images carefully!

Step 5

For the next step in this cat tutorial, you’ll need to add a zigzag style line above the left paw you drew.

Then you’ll draw on the right leg, which looks almost identical to the left leg except for the fact that it extends higher on the right side.

Step 6

You are now very close to finishing drawing your cat, so for this next step you should draw in a curved line down from the neck.

This is another step where you should closely follow the reference image as a guide.

Once you’ve drawn the back, you can add the two hind feet as shown in the picture. Don’t forget to add the toe split!

Step 7

For this next step, you can draw the tail to form a curved sausage shape.

Once you have drawn the tail, the only thing left is to draw a curved line from the hind paw to make the cat’s paw. With this step, your cat drawing is almost done!

Step 8

You’re almost at the end of your journey to learning how to draw a cat, but your cat drawing needs a face!

You can start by drawing a nose with a wide smiling cat mouth underneath it as you can see in the reference image.

You can then draw a jagged line above the nose to hint at the muzzle. You can then draw six lines to form the cat’s whiskers.

Finally, we’ll add the eyes. The eyes in the reference image are made up of a series of circles joined by several lashes.

You can draw it in this style or if you find it difficult, you can use two circles with a dot in each for a simpler but no less cute look!

Step 9

The last step is one of the most fun in learning how to draw a cat, and that’s adding some color!

We give an example of one way you can color cats for our final reference, but this is where you should let your creativity flow!

You can use any color you love to color your cat drawing to really give it a personality.
