Step 1
To start this tutorial on how to draw a monster, we will start with the head of your monster. To do this, simply draw a curved line for the top of the head.
You can then draw two wavy horns cooking from the top of the head as they appear in the reference image.
Step 2 – Draw the body of your monster
Your monster drawing needs a boy, so draw a boy for it in this step. The monster design has a long and lanky body, so we’ll use a downward curve from the bottom of the head.
The lines should align with the head, but remember to leave a small space between the head and torso, as we will be adding arms over these gaps in the following steps.
Step 3 – Next, add some arms to your monster
This wouldn’t be much of a monster without some big and scary arms, so this step of our how to draw a monster tutorial will focus on that.
As we mentioned in the previous step, the arms will go through the gaps that we have left between the body and the head. The arms should extend straight down to the bottom of the body, where the legs begin.
However, you can make them even longer if you so choose! Don’t forget to give your monster some big and sharp claws on its hands!
Step 4 – Now create a scary face for your monster
How scary a monster is depends a lot on how scary its face is! For that reason, we will design a scary face for your monster drawing in this step.
The two main elements of a good face are the eyes and the mouth. Focusing on the eyes first, we will see them look angry by having a sharp angle on the sides.
You can even add some brow lines to make it look even better! Then use a curved line with some dots below it to make the nose.
Finally for this step we will draw a big mouth for your monster. We used serrated lines for the inside of the mouth to create sharp teeth.
You can also change the design of the face if you want a different look or expression for your monster.
Step 5 – Draw some details for your monster
You’re reaching the end of the tutorial on how to draw a monster, so paint some more detail for your monster in this step.
We’ll show you some details you can add, but don’t be afraid to add your own!
For our design, we drew some short lines on the arms to make this scary monster look shaggy and messy.
Add a few lines on the body to create some texture for this step!
Step 6 – Next, draw some legs for your monster drawing
Before we proceed to color your monster drawing, we will draw some legs underneath the monster. For this design, the legs will be much shorter than its long sleeves.
We also used some jagged lines for the toes, as this will make them look sharper and more intimidating.
That completes our monster design, but before we continue, you should feel free to draw any additions you want!
Whether you change or add some details or even paint a great background, there are many ways you can create your own variation on this drawing. We look forward to seeing what you come up with!
Step 7 – Finish your drawing with some color
This last step in our tutorial on how to draw a monster is to unleash some color creativity on your drawing.
In our reference image, we’ve used a predominantly brown color palette, with darker shades for some extra detail.
These are the colors we chose, but this is the step where you can show off your amazing color matching skills! This is your monster drawing, and you should use any color you want for it!
You can use some more muted earth colors or go with some bright and vibrant colors.
Maybe it’s a swamp monster with green tones, a lava monster with a red palette, or a hideous snow monster with white and blue colors to color.
You can also create some amazing looks for your drawings using some fun art mediums for coloring.
Mediums like acrylic paint and crayons can create a vibrant colorful monster, while watercolors and crayons will make your monster more muted and subtle.
