How to Draw a Flag

Please see the drawing tutorial in the video below

You can refer to the simple step-by-step drawing guide below

Step 1 – Draw the flagpole

Start the drawing with the flagpole. You can do this for as long as you like but in this case it will be slightly “cut off” at the bottom without showing its full length. Otherwise the flag would have to be drawn much smaller than in the example.

The pole should consist of pretty much just two parallel lines joined at the top. If you have trouble doing them, you can use a ruler to help you.

Step 2 – Sketch the flag

To show that the flag is blowing in the wind, you’ll want to draw it with a wave following its overall shape. You can create this effect by creating what looks like two overlapping sections as shown in the example. Also, try and draw every line defining them with a curve or a wave.

Step 3 – Add space between flag & pole

The flag will be attached to the column at the top and bottom. This means that the middle part will be pulled away from it creating some space in that area. You can outline this with just a curve as shown again in the example.

Step 4 – Draw the terminals

For this quick step, add a small round tip at the top end of the flagpole.

Step 5 – Add small details and complete the line drawing

For the final set of details, add two small strips of fabric that go around the flagpole at the top and bottom of the base. This will be what holds it in place.

Once you’ve done this simple step, you can trace your lines with a black pen, marker, or bold them with a pencil. Just make sure you’re happy with your drawing before doing so.

Step 6 – Color the flag

To color the flag you can make the tip gray, the pole brown and the flag itself any color you like. In this case, it will just be red. When coloring, leave a little white dot on the top left of it for accent (light reflection), this will make it appear more shiny and metallic.

You can also use pretty much any coloring method you like or have available such as paints, markers, or crayons.
