You can refer to the simple step-by-step drawing guide below

Step 1

Drawing an entire desert may sound intimidating, but we’ll make it easier by going through each section in this tutorial on how to draw a desert.

For this first step, we will focus on the horizon as well as the blazing sun above the desert. For the horizon, we’ll use some curves to show the sand dunes in the desert.

Near the right hand side of the desert, there will be a line a bit more than the rest to show how the wind has blown the sand at an angle.

You can then finish by drawing a circle for the sunrise (or sunset) above the desert. With all these parts drawn, we can move on to step 2.

Step 2 – Next, draw some sand dunes for the desert

Now that you have an outline for your desert drawing, we can start adding some details to it in this step.

For now we will mainly focus on adding some curves and circles down from the horizon as well as below them.

The reference image will show you how to position these lines to get the actual location of these dunes.

Step 3 – Now, draw some more sand dunes

This desert was looking great! We will continue to add it in this step of the how to draw desert tutorial.

To do this, we will mainly use some extra lines to stretch what you drew in the previous step further down into the image.

If you have a nice large piece of paper, you can stretch these pieces even further and paint some more dunes using what you’ve learned to create an even bigger desert!

In the next few steps, we’ll move away from the dunes a bit and focus on the sky above the desert.

Step 4 – Next, draw the sky over the desert

The sky above the desert will often be a sight to behold as the sun catches the swirling sands and the surrounding heat waves.

We will draw this incredible horizon in this part of your desert drawing. To do this, we will draw layers of curves above the desert.

The curves that we will use for the sky will be quite different from the ones you drew for the dunes, as they will be a bit flatter.

These lines may seem simple, but they work together to create an incredible backdrop for the desert. They will look especially great when we color them in the final step, but first, we have a few final details to add in the next step.

Step 5 – Now you can complete the final details of your desert drawing

In this step of the how to draw desert tutorial, we will finish with some final details.

The main thing we will be adding will be some birds flying to the left of the sun, and this simple detail will really help create an atmospheric backdrop to the photo.

Then with the birds added, you’ve completed the steps in this tutorial! You don’t need to stop here, though, as you can also add some final points of your own.

There are so many options you can use! Perhaps you could change the weather conditions, add a sandstorm, or paint some intrepid camels walking through the desert.

These are just a handful of ideas, but there are so many possibilities with deserts! Be sure to get creative and have fun with it to see what happens.

Step 6 – Complete your desert drawing with some colors

For the final part of your desert painting, we’ll finish off with some amazing colors for this amazing desert.

In our reference image, we used a nice range of colors like yellow, orange, brown and blue.

However, these are just some of the colors you can choose from, and you should feel free to use any color you love for your drawings.

You can then decide on how you will bring these colors to life! You can keep the colors bright by using some acrylic paints, crayons or markers, keep them more subtle with watercolors and crayons, or a combination of the two.

It’s entirely up to you and we can’t wait to see what amazing color and artistic tools you use to bring this photo to life.

Your desert drawing is done!

You have successfully completed this desert drawing tutorial! By following all the steps and taking it slowly, you have ended up with an incredible desert landscape.
