Step 1
The secret to making a difficult drawing like this easier is to break it down into smaller parts, and that’s what we’re going to do now.
We’ll actually start with quite a bit of this cartoon hand-drawn when we get started, but we’ll break it down.
First, use a curved line forming an almost square shape for the wrist. Instead of closing it off like we did in our reference, you can also stretch it to the arm rest or even draw the shirt sleeves.
Once it has been drawn, use a large circle on the left side for the palm. Then we will add a finger and this will be created using a unique circle shape.
Finally, you can add a thumb. This will extend from a curved line that forms the right side of the palm.
This can be complicated, so take your time with this step and you can continue when it looks like our reference image.
Step 2 – Now, draw the index finger
You have a good base to work with everything we drew in the previous step of the cartoon hand drawing tutorial and now we will continue adding fingers and other details as we go.
For now, we’ll just add the index finger.
This will have some space between it and the thumb, and it will be much longer than the thumb and little finger.
Speaking of the little finger, we’ll also add a small horizontal curve at the right base of that finger. That’s all for now and then we can move on!
Step 3 – Next, draw the ring finger
So far, you’re doing great on this drawing! We’ll keep things simple for now as we add one more finger to the hand.
This time, it will be the ring finger, and this finger is to the right of the little finger. It will be very similar in shape to the other fingers, but it will be slightly longer than the pinky.
It should also be roughly the same length as the index finger.
To finish this step, draw one of the other small curved lines at the base of the right ring finger. There will only be one more finger to add before we add some finer details!
Step 4 – Now, draw the last finger
Now you are ready to add the final finger to your cartoon hand drawing! This time, it will be the middle finger that we will add.
This finger, like the one on your hand, will be the longest of them all. It won’t take much longer, but it should still be noticeable.
As with all the other fingers, we will also add another one of the small curves on the right side of the base of this finger. Then we’ll get ready for some final details in the next step of the tutorial!
Step 5 – Add the final details to your drawing
You’ve passed the hardest parts of this tutorial on how to draw a cartoon hand and now we can add some details to perfect it for the final step!
These details are quite simple, but they are very important to make the hand look more realistic. First, we’ll add two small curves to the midpoint of each finger to show where the joints are.
Alternatively, you can add a horizontal curve above the wrist. We’ll then finish off this step by adding two larger, connecting wavy lines on the wrist of the hand.
Once these have been added, you can also add some extra details of your own!
Some ideas would be to paint a background, add sleeves or even paint some rings on the fingers. How will you end it?
Step 6 – Finalize your drawing with color
Time to wrap up this tutorial with some color! In this step you will bring this drawing to life with color and there are tons of options to do here.
There are so many different color schemes and skin tones that you can apply when coloring this hand.
As you can see in our reference image, we used different tones and color variations on different areas of the hand to make it look more textured and realistic, and you can do so no matter which color you choose.
