How To Draw A Killer Whale

Please see the drawing tutorial in the video below

You can refer to the simple step-by-step drawing guide below

Step 1

We’ll start this tutorial on how to draw a killer whale by drawing the creature’s face and dorsal fin.

In general, killer whales have a rather curvaceous body, so we will use a lot of curves in this photo.

Now let’s use some of these circles to create the killer whale’s head. The top of the head will extend inward to create a rather pointed mouth for it, as shown in the reference image.

Then use some more rounded lines to create the underside of the killer whale’s head. The next thing will be a large round pectoral fin extending below the body.

Finally, draw the first lines for the large dorsal fin on the body, then we can move on to the next step.

Step 2 – Now draw the rest of the body contour

In the second step of this killer whale drawing, you will complete the outline for the rest of the body.

First, start by drawing another pectoral fin at the base of the body to match the remaining fin.

Then, extend a pretty wavy line back from this fin for the killer whale’s belly, and then you can draw another long, rounded line for the back once you’ve cut the dorsal fin.

Finally, finish this step by drawing the caudal fin at the end of the killer whale, then move on to step 3.

Step 3 – Next, draw some details for the killer whale

You have completed the outline of the drawing and now we can start adding some interior details to the killer whale.

First, draw the bottom of the mouth and add a row of teeth to this bottom row. Once drawn, add a small shape to the face contour for the killer whale’s eyes.

To wrap up this third step, we’ll then start adding some finer line details to the whale’s face and body to give it more dimension relative to its body shape.

Step 4 – Now draw some more interior details for the killer whale

Continuing from the previous step of this killer whale drawing, we will add some details to the body and fins.

These details will be subtle, but they will be very helpful in adding dimension to the creature. Add some lines along the contour of the pectoral fins as well as the caudal fins.

Then you can also add some curvilinear detail to the middle of the killer whale’s body. Once you’ve drawn all these details, we’re ready for some final manipulation in the next step.

Step 5 – Add Final Details to Your Killer Whale Drawing

Killer whales are not only famous for their hunting skills and intelligence, but also for their distinctive markings.

We’ll be adding these body marks to this step of our how to draw a killer whale tutorial and this will get you ready for the final step where you’ll color your work!

First, add a circle with some sharp corners on it near the killer whale’s eyes. Then we’ll draw some circles and curves near the animal’s face, back, and belly.

This will help create the types of shapes common on killer whales.

After these details are drawn, you can also add some elements of your own!

It can be fun to paint an ocean background and then you can add some killer whales or some other ocean creature you might like.

Step 6 – Finish your killer whale drawing with color

You are ready to complete this killer whale drawing in the last step of this tutorial. As we mentioned earlier, this step will see you colorize your work to perfect it.

Killer whales have a fairly simple color palette of black and white, and while they may not be too colorful, they still have a really distinctive look!

Even though they come in two primary colors, you can still mix and match different shades of black to add more character to your body. For the white parts, we actually used light beige shades to make it look a bit more dynamic.

Are you going to use a similar color scheme to the one we used or do you think you would use some lighter colors for a more stylish look for the killer whale?
