Step 1
To start up the head of the we we, before the first we will set a color orange down. It doesn’t really matter if this orange has to be a full color or not, because we’ll blend it with some other color later.
Step 2
Next, we will layer over some black on the bottom of the canvas. For this example, I will do a mountain scene below my sunset.
Add some bright yellow radiating from the middle of your pages. All are places where heaven will go.
Step 3
Clean up your mountains a bit and give them some extra strokes. As you can see from the image, I’ve also added a second row of mountains that are dark red. This creates the illusion of depth, like mountains fading toward the horizon.
Step 4
Add a face sky light suspended in the center of your sky – right in the brightest areas of yellow.
Step 5
Next, we’ll need to add an opaque yellow layer on the bottom half of the canvas. A small amount of yellow creates some of the blindness you usually see at dusk.
Step 6
What is a cloudless sunset? Technically, it’s still a sunset… but it’s not the sunset I want in my life. Draw some sparse clouds that are yellow at the bottom (which is facing the sun) and a darker red at the top.
Step 7
Finally, add a little darker red on top of your first painting to give your sunset a bit more dimension. And don’t forget to share your own sunset picture with me on our facebook page.
