How to Draw a Potion

Please see the drawing tutorial in the video below

You can refer to the simple step-by-step drawing guide below

Step 1 – Draw the bottom of the potion

Start by drawing the bottom of the potion. In this case, it should be pretty close to a circle shape (with a slight opening at the top).

Step 2 – Draw the neck of the bottle

Going up from the bottom, add the neck with a slightly wider brim at the top (as shown in the example).

Step 3 – Underline the bottle border

Draw a slightly curved underline to help emphasize the border and help show that the potion is somewhat thicker at the top.

Step 4 – Draw the Button

Pass through the neck of the bottle to remove the cork. Make it a shape close to a rectangle but give it a slightly rounded top. You can make its bottom pretty much flat and the corners slightly rounded.

An important thing to note is that the cork should be narrower than the neck of the potion. The reason for this is to show that the glass has some thickness to it. The space you leave between the border of the bottle and the cork will be the glass wall.

Step 5 – Draw the liquid

For this step, add the potion liquid. You can draw its shape quite similar to the curve of the bottle. In this case, it will only go all the way to the base of the neck.

Similar to the cork, you’ll want to draw the liquid some distance away from the border of the bottle to show the thickness of the glass again.

After you have finished drawing the line, you can use a black pen or marker to scan it. Alternatively, you can also darken your lines with a pencil.

Step 6 – Color the potion

To color the potion, make the cork light yellow/brown and the glass light gray. You can make the potion any color you like but in this case it will be red.

Also leave a little oval highlight (which reflects light) to the side of the bottle (like in the example). You can sketch this part very lightly with a pencil to make sure you don’t accidentally color over it.

For the actual coloring method, you can use a crayon for the cork and an ordinary pencil for the gray of the glass. If you want the liquid to look pretty bright like in the example, a red marker might be a good choice.
