Step 1
In the first step of the tutorial on how to draw a cartoon cat, we will start with the outlines of this cute cat’s head and ears.
The top of the head will be drawn in a curve, and there will be two small curls gathered on the top of the head.
Then for the ears we’ll use some more curved lines that have a pointed end at the end of each.
Finally for this step we will draw the sides of the head. We want them to look nice and hairy, so we’ll use some sharp curves like the ones in our reference image.
Now that’s all there is to do, then move on to step 2!
Step 2 – Now draw the body and some ear details
With the head sketch done for your cartoon cat, we can now start adding some nicer details and some bodies.
First, we will draw some curves along the inner circumference of the ear. Make sure to add some small pointed sections that stick out from these inner areas to make them look wider.
Then we’ll start drawing the outline of the cat’s back as well as its front legs. We will use some bumpy lines for these, as they will again help the cat look furry.
Step 3 – Draw the front paws and the upper part of the tail
Continuing with this cartoon cat tutorial, we will now draw the paws and some tails for the cat.
The right paws are pretty straightforward, as all you need to do is draw some small, curved lines that connect at the base of the front legs.
Then, draw one more rounded, bumpy line inside the thigh line for the bent hindquarters, and then another line below that for the top of the tail.
Once you’ve drawn these latest details so they look like in our reference image, we can move on to step 4!
Step 4 – Next, complete the body contours
The fourth part of your cartoon cat drawing will help you perfect the contours before we add the final details in the next step of the tutorial.
First, draw some small, pointed shapes near the top of the face for some expressive brows.
After that, we will finish drawing the outline of the cat’s tail. This figure will be drawn using the same bumpy, slightly jagged line we’ve used for the other areas of the cat so far.
Once these outlines are completed, we will add the final touches in the next step of the tutorial!
Step 5 – Add the final details to your cartoon cat drawing
You’ve reached the fifth step of the tutorial on how to draw a cartoon cat and in this step we’ll be perfecting the details on the face and any other final touches.
We gave this cat some big round eyes with big round pupils inside them.
Then we added a small circle with a pointed base for the nose, and then drew a slight wavy line below it for the smiley mouth.
Finish with some beard dots, and then you’re ready for the final step! Before proceeding, be sure to add any additional details and elements of your own that you might like.
You could draw a cute background for this cat, and if you did, what kind of setup would you choose?
Step 6 – Finish your cartoon cat drawing with color
This is the final step of how to draw this cartoon cat, and in it we will finish with some color!
Cats can come in many different color schemes, so this is a great opportunity to pull out all of your favorite colors to complete this look.
In our example, we used some light cream tones for the majority of the cat, and then we worked with some brown highlights. For a brighter color, we also used some vibrant pink inside the ear.
These are the colors we’ve chosen, but feel free to use any color you like!
You can also experiment with various art media to get the intensity and tone you want.
