When it comes to drawing, the less solid an object is, the more difficult it is to draw, and since they are made up of many links, it can be difficult to learn how to draw strings. If you want to teach yourself how to draw some strings, then you are definitely on the right path!

This step by step tutorial on how to draw lines will show you how easy it can be once you know what to do.

You can refer to the simple step-by-step drawing guide below

Step 1

The chain is made up of several connecting links, so we’ll focus on each one as we go through this tutorial on how to draw it.

A picture of necklaces may look simple, but it can be more complicated than you think when connecting them.

To draw this first link, you can draw an oval, then draw another link inside it. Then just make sure there’s an empty space in the bottom right corner.

To make it easier to draw yourself, you can draw basic ovals with a light pencil and then redraw it with a pencil or a darker pencil. Once you have that link, you’re ready for the next step.

Step 2 – Draw the second link of the chain

From this step on, your line drawing will start to get a little more complicated, but don’t worry as we’ll take it slow!

Again, you may want to use a pencil to plan ahead and then rewrite with a pen when it looks good to you.

The next link will repeat from the inner center of the first link and over to the right. Then it will repeat again it will go up the left side of the first link.

It sounds complicated, but looking at the reference image helps a lot. This time, the space you left will be on the bottom left and that’s where you’ll draw the next link.

Step 3 – Add a third link

Now you are getting started with drawing links, so we will continue in this third step of the tutorial on how to draw strings.

You can add the third link in the same way you added the second link for this step. As you can imagine, this time you will leave some space on the right hand side, as it will alternate each time.

Step 4 – You can now draw the fourth link

You know the drill now! You can add the next link to your string drawing in this next step. This link will follow the recipe you started with in this tutorial.

As we mentioned in the previous step, the space will again alternate and be on the left side of this particular link.

Step 5 – Now, add the fifth link of your string drawing

Your chain is really starting to take shape and your hard work will soon pay off! In this fifth step, you won’t be surprised to hear that we’re adding another link to the chain.

I’m sure I don’t need to tell you how to do this, because by this point you’re already a pro! Simply draw the fifth link and then leave some space on the right hand side for this second link to the last.

Step 6 – Add the final link of your string drawing

You’ve drawn a lot of links in your string drawing and now it’s time to draw the final one! Since this is the last link in the chain, the only difference to this link is that there will be no gap at the end of the chain.

Once you have drawn the last link of the chain, you are done with the drawing part of this picture!

Before you move on to the final step, though, be sure to add any extra elements you want to your image!

Maybe you can point out what’s at the end of the string, or even draw a spooky ghost holding it! There are so many possibilities you can achieve, so make sure to let your creativity run wild!

Step 7 – Complete your line drawing with some colors

In the final step of this line drawing tutorial, you can relax with some coloring fun as you bring your drawing to life.

We used a metallic gray palette for our example image, and while that’s one approach you can take, feel free to get creative and use any color you like!

Even if you keep the necklace in a metallic gray, you can add some wonderful pops of color to the mix by coloring the background and extra details nice and bright.

We can’t wait to see how you bring this image to life using your colors!
